Pipe losses and energy-carrier volumes have normally been disregarded in thermal solar installations,. However, these have a significant effect on the efficiency of the overall system. The author claims the potential for optimization on days with fluctuating or low insulation is in excess of 10% and argues that this can be exploited using simple control technology so that the expense of additional signal detection can be kept low. If the volumes and temperatures of the collectors and piping are taken into account, it is concluded, these improvements can be realized.
