RE: How to use TRNSED ?

Dear Maurice,

TRNSED is indeed a nice program but I must admit it is not really easy to use... First, you have to make sure that you are using a recent version, since we made many modifications to TRNSED last year. The version included in the "hot fix" on the web site is OK. Please also make sure that your User.ID enables TRNSED. It should say something like
15B-X123 with TRNSED
If you are missing the "with TRNSED" part, please contact your distributor to receive a new user.id file.

Then, here is how to use the "Create Distributable" command

Go to TRNSED / Create Distributable
- Enter the Title and Author information
- Leave the "Create Distributable in Directory" box checked and select a destination directory (e.g. C:\MyTRNSED). Click yes if you are asked to create this directory.
- Under "Include the following files", Type the TRNSED file(s) that you want to include with the full path OR use the Browse button and select them.
- Click OK.

This should create the destination folder (if necessary) and copy some files. TRNSHELL will put in the destination directory most of the files needed to run the TRNSED application:
- TRNSYS Executable and DLL's: TRNSYS.exe TRNLIB.DLL Extdll.dll
- Additional files required (or often used) by TRNSYS: Ashrae.cof Cnfgtr.trn Length.dat Load.dat Month1.dat Units.lab
- TRNSED Files: TRNSED.EXE TRNSED.ID TRNSHELL.DFT

TRNSHELL will also attempt to help you by copying the .TRD Files and "some" of the input files (Weather files, pictures, PDF to which you link, etc.). Unfortunately it is not easy to find all required files and you will most probably have to add some files yourself. (A simple example is when you select the weather file through a pulldown menu: TRNSHELL will "see" that you need the weather file which is selected when you create the distributable, but it will miss the other ones).

Moreover, TRNSHELL sometimes modifies some pathnames in the process. E.g. if you are using a file called Weather\Data1.dat which is in a subdirectory of you project directory, TRNSHELL will copy that file to the destination directory (NOT in a subdirectory) and change the path in your .TRD file. This can be annoying when you are using many files in subdirectories and want to keep a "clean structure".

For that reason, I often use the following trick:
I put my .TRD file in a clean directory and I put ALL required files for the TRNSED application in subdirectories and use RELATIVE PATHS. I use the "Create TRNSED" command as described here above, but I delete all files that TRNSHELL puts in the destination directory except for the 12 files listed here above. Then, I just copy the whole directory where my .TRD is located (including subdirectories) into the destination directory. That way, I am sure to have a "clean" .TRD file with correct relative paths and I am sure to have all required files in the correct subfolders in my destination directory.

Finally, I always test the created TRNSED application as follows:
- Create the distributable and make sure all required files are in there (using the trick here above)
- Rename my TRNSYS15 folder, e.g. to TRNSYS15TMP
- Test the distributable by running TRNSED.exe which is in the destination directory
That way, you make sure that your TRNSED application is not using files that are in your TRNSYS15 installation folder, which would be missing for people using your application.

Do not hesitate to contact me if you need further help with TRNSED. I am also sending you an example which illustrates some new TRNSED capabilities and the latest TRNSHELL & TRNSED versions, which will be posted to our website soon. Other TRNSYS users are welcome to contact me if they want to receive those files (it is a rather big attachment).

Regards,

Michaël
