Dear Peter & TRNSYS users,
Our supplier of the digital/compaq fortran compiler makes us aware that
the compiler will no more be offered. This particular supplier offers
the "Intel Visual Fortran Professional" compiler instead. There is an
introductory price offer until the end of this month.
If there is any, the only reason to change the compiler is the
preference to work with the compiler you and the TRNSYS distributors are
most familiar with. (I have greatly appreciated your support/guidelines
to work with the digital and compaq compilers.)
Intel Visual Fortran 8 and Compaq Visual Fortran 6.6B will be supported
with TRNSYS 16. In addition, the "drop-in DLL" mechanism will allow you
to use any compiler and any language to create your own Types. So the
"recommended compiler" will only be required to recompile or modify the
TRNSYS kernel and standard Types.
We are currently evaluating Intel Visual Fortran 8 with TRNSYS 15 but
there are still unresolved issues with porting the application from CVF
to IVF. I will keep you informed when know more.
I am sorry I cannot really tell you to purchase IVF now, neither can I
tell you that the best option is to wait. It depends on the discount you
will get until the end of this month, I guess. It is obvious that IVF is
a longer lasting choice but TRNSYS 15 is not compatible with this
compiler right now, and TRNSYS 16 will be compatible with CVF 6.6B.
Please also note, in your price comparisons, that IVF requires Visual
Studio .NET from Microsoft (unless your dealer has a bundle)
I hope this helps,
Michaël Kummert
