Reading external data from a file.

Hello everybody,
for my "Diplomarbeit" I write a new Type which has to read data from an
external text-file.
Can anybody tell me, how to do this.  Somehow, it doesn't work with the
normal Fortran programming lines: open(*,file'sldk') read(*,*) close(*).
